Jammu and Kashmir: custody period of Mehbooba Mufti extended by 3 months

In August last year, Article 370 of the Indian Constitution giving special rights to Jammu and Kashmir was nullified by the Modi government. Hundreds of state leaders were detained prior to this decision. With the situation normal, most people have been released. Mehbooba Mufti has also run a coalition government in the state with BJP. She had warned many times of severe consequences when Article 370 was removed.

Earlier, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Farooq Abdullah and his son Omar Abdullah have been released. PSA was also imposed on these two, which was withdrawn. Farooq and Omar Abdullah had appealed to release all the detained leaders, including Mehbooba.
What is PSA?
Under the Public Safety Act, which came into existence in Jammu and Kashmir in 1978, a person can be jailed for 6 months without trial. The state government may extend this period to 2 years. Actually it has two provisions. The first threat to public order and second to the security of the state. Under the first provision, one can be imprisoned for six months without trial and two years under the second provision.
